How to celebrate Easter with the kids at home

Okay, so we all know Easter is going to feel a little different this year. For most of us, the Easter break is normally about taking time out and getting away for a few days, but this year, we’re all in the same boat and staying put.

While there won’t be any need to prepare catering for the masses, you should still plan to make your ‘at home’ Easter celebrations as special as can be. Here’s some ways you can get the kids involved and bring the fun indoors.

Create a theme

Whether it’s an Easter brunch, picnic or games night, tailor a theme that suits your family’s interests. Get the kids to design an invitation to “mail” out to each family member and get them excited by counting down the days until Easter.

Prep & decorate

What’s a celebration without decorations? Brighten up your party space and the kids’ spirits with these decoration ideas that also double up as boredom busters.

There are literally thousands of Easter decorating ideas out there. Here are a couple of inexpensive and fun activities to spruce up your celebrations.

• Dip dyed eggs – these look great as table centrepieces and the kids will have fun dipping and creating their own colour combinations.
• Easter tree – make your own Easter decorations to be hung on a broken tree branch. This idea shows you how to make your own suncatcher eggs using plastic beads (very cool!), but you can keep things simple and decorate paper eggs to hang with ribbon. You’re only limited by your imagination (and what tools you have on hand)!

Theme your food

Don’t leave all the food prep to yourself, get the kids in the kitchen – it’s half the fun!

Keep it simple like an Easter themed charcuterie board, filled with everyone’s favourite nibbles or get creative with Easter inspired goodies.

Deviled eggs – here’s a creative spin on the traditional dressed eggs – kids style.

Carrot shaped brownies – who doesn’t love a good brownie, this is an easy recipe for the kids that looks and tastes delicious.

Ready, set, hunt!

Easter egg hunts are the highlight of every kid’s Easter. The annual egg hunt might be confined to your home this year, but the children won’t care. Whether its indoors or in your backyard, get creative with signs and clues to help them find their chocolatey treats.

For the older kids, devise a scavenger style hunt with riddles or tasks they must complete to uncover the location of their hidden treats.
